Of course it is awesome The only thing to say is IMO if you are not sure whether you want this lens vs the 300 f2.8 IS II or 500 f4 IS II, you probably would be better with the other options. Just my opinion on what I have seen. But if the 300 is not long enough and the 500 too big and/or heavy, this lens is awesome. Bokeh and sharpness are much improved over the version 1. Sharpness is really great, top notch. Bokeh is not perfect, but is quite decent in most situations. Just occasionally it can still look a little ugly. Check out sample images, no one stops this lens down for sharpness.

Excellent lens for handhold and super sharp! I bought this lens to replaced my 300mm l 2.8. Compared to the 300mm, 400mm DO II lens is slightly sharper and much lighter than 300mm L and much much lighter than 400mm 2.8L ...If you want to get rid of some of the weight in your backpack and travel all the time, this is the best lens to go. You will not regrets!
