Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR DX

Nikon AF-S DX VR 16-85 I'm happy with the quality of this lens vs. the 18-55 VR it replaced. In comparison to the 18-200 VR this lens offers much less distortion on both ends of the spectrum. The focus is fast, motor is almost silent and tack sharp throughout the focal lengths. It is built quite well and looks like it will hold up for quite some time. There is a metal lens mount with a rubber seal to keep out the elements. The body of the lens is a tough plastic, however the barrels are made of metal. It accepts 67mm filters and comes with a nice petal shaped lens hood. The only shortcomings of this lens are in regards of the speed. F/ 3.5 - 5.6 is relatively slow. You will find in low light conditions, such as dimly lit indoor areas that this lens will not perform as well as one would hope. Focus is still on point with a strong AF illuminator (D200 as tested), however shutter speeds will still drop substantially. VR makes up for some of this loss in speed, but it cant do everything. You're going to need a flash in order to keep shutter speeds quick to capture motion indoors. Even at max aperture f/3.5 is at 16mm, so your not going to be able to get in close to the action. Dont rely on VR as a crutch, but as an added bonus to make sure your images are as sharp as possible. Outdoors this lens is great. 16mm will give you a lot of extra perspective in comparison to 18mm kit lenses. VR along with any aperture outdoors will give you more than enough speed to capture most motion. Overall this is a great walk around kit lens replacement. For indoor use be prepared to use a flash. I would also recommend a fast prime lens as well. I trade off with a 50mm 1.8D for really fast action outside and great images indoors. If your looking to spend twice as much, go for a 17-35 or 17-55 F/2.8 zoom from the Nikon pro line. You wont get VR, but with a constant aperture of 2.8, you probably wont need it.Read full review

My new lens! Arrived earlier than expected. Works great. It's my go-to lens for general out and about shooting. The 16mm focal length adds an extra dimension to my style of photography.

I am looking forward to using it for landscapes on my trip to Montana. I will enjoy shooting different landscapes with this wide angle lens! I think this is a good purchase.
