Good image quality, usable zoom range; needs zoom lock This 100-400 mm is a better solution, for me, than an 80 - 200 (200 not enough) or the 200-600 (200 so tight!). With 100 mm, you can take a picture of a subject in front of you, it's wide enough to still see a whole face and chest -- and the 400 is a good magnification! I'm impressed at the image quality. I've shot birds mostly during the two weeks I have owned the lens, and even a bird that seems a spec can be enlarge with good image quality. Finally got a "classic" full moon shot that was clear, never achieved that with other lenses. Like many have said, there is no lens lock so the zoom gradually releases and extends the lens as you walk along. That's unfortunate.

Fabulous lend Everyone who writes that this lens is great but expensive, well you get what you pay for here! Those who can afford a high end camera should ALWAYS use an appropriate lens to go with it! This is such a lens! Best camera with best lens equals best pictures!! It’s that simple!

Pricey but great IQ As per all the reviews, great IQ, very sharp and focuses at a relatively close distance. With my A7R3 I can crop in ridiculous amounts and still have a nice image. It's not small, but it does fit into my bag, taking the place of a FE 70-300. It is a significant upgrade from that lens. The 70-300 produced a sharp image in crop sensor mode, and was significantly smaller. This lens is sharp across the image at all apertures and focuses on moving birds/animals more quickly. It's a keeper for me! The pics are from my first outing with the lens.
